Ghanaian gospel singer Empress Gifty has reignited a long-running conversation within Christian circles, whether wearing make-up aligns with biblical principles.
In a video posted on Instagram, 2025, the artiste, fully glammed herself, tackled the issue head-on by citing scripture to back her position.
“If you read Ephesians Chapter 1, it tells you that make-up is in the Bible. It tells the story where King Ahasuerus ordered all virgins to be arrested in the Bible,” she explained in the video, drawing a connection between cosmetics and biblical rituals of beauty preparation.

Referring to the story of Esther, Empress Gifty emphasized that cosmetics were part of the biblical queen’s preparation before meeting the king. “Also, before Queen Esther met King Ahasuerus, the Bible states that she bathed with cosmetics. I mean there was make-up in the Bible,” she said.
The gospel musician’s statement has stirred conversation across social media, with many users both supporting and challenging her interpretation. While some praised her for shedding light on what they see as a misunderstood subject, others questioned the application of such references in today’s spiritual context.
