The only Ghanaian who made it to the list is 24-year-old rapper, Stormzy, a Ghanaian UK-based musician. The English grime and hip-hop artist competes in the Best International Act category with Davido, Tiwa Savage, Fally Pupa, J Hus and many others.

BET merged this year’s Best International Act: Africa and U.K making the competition very keen. In the past years, Ghana has been represented by musicians like Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, MzVee, D-Black, and others so it comes as a surprise to many when none of our top musicians made it to this year’s award.

BET Award 2018 Best International Act nominees:

1. Booba (France)
2. Cassper Nyovest (SA)
3. Dadju (France)
4. Davido (Nigeria)
5. Distruction Boyz (SA)
6. Fally Ipupa (Dr. Congo)
7. J Hus (UK)
8. Niska (France)
9. Tiwa Savage (Nigeria)
10. Stefflon Don (UK)
11. Stormzy (UK)

Zionfelix.net history tells that Sarkodie in 2012 picked the Best International Act, Africa award and was again nominated for the 2014 and 2015 editions of the event held in Los Angeles, USA. Tema-based music group, R2bees was nominated for the 2013 edition of the awards battling 2Face Idibia (Nigeria), Toya Delazy (South Africa), Radio and Weasel (Uganda), Ice Prince (Nigeria) and Donald (South Africa) for the year’s award.

Reggae and dancehall artiste Stonebwoy won the 2015 Best African Act Award at the BET and was again nominated for the 2017 edition of the event but lost it to Nigeria’s Wizkid. Lynx Entertainment signee, MzVee made history in 2016 as the first female Ghanaian musician to be nominated for the awards established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network but could not bring the glory home.

Rapper D-Black before Sarkodie had a nod in the 2011 BET Awards when Chris Brown led the pack with 6 nominations followed closely by Lil Wayne with five of his own.
