Wendy Shay says her success story almost unfolded against the expectations of some of the very people who shape Ghana’s music industry.

Speaking with Kafui Dey, the singer revisited the uncertainty that surrounded her early steps, describing an environment where belief in her potential was far from unanimous. While she stayed focused on her goals, she said others were already writing her off.

According to her, the doubt did not just exist quietly in the background. Some influential figures actively tried to steer her manager, Bullet, away from investing in her future, convinced she would not make an impact.

“I’m always grateful to Bullet for being that person who understood everyone’s journey. He never made me feel less of myself and he actually saw the bigger picture. Even though people told him he should forget me,” she said.

She recounted one encounter that left a lasting impression, noting that a prominent industry voice dismissed her chances directly to her face.

“Big industry gatekeepers told him that and I was there. A big person in the industry said it to my face that it’s not going to work for me. He said I wouldn’t hit right in front of me,” she disclosed.

Instead of retreating, Wendy Shay said the criticism strengthened her resolve. She leaned into her conviction and urged Bullet to stay the course with her.

“I told Bullet not to listen to him because I believed I would hit. Bullet said that he’s rather listening to what God was saying and I’m really grateful for that,” she stated.

She added that the narrative shifted quickly once her music gained traction, though not everyone was willing to acknowledge her effort.

“When I became a hit, I remember vividly that I was in a car going to the studio with Bullet and the person called again and said I didn’t hit because of me, but rather Bullet. Since he said I wouldn’t hit and I have, he wants to downplay my hard work and credit someone just so he would feel better,” Wendy Shay further stated.
