The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with the murder of a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast, Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, whose body was discovered at Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was picked up on Monday, June 15, 2026, at about 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station. The arrest was carried out by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following what police described as sustained, intelligence-led operations.
According to preliminary police investigations, on June 11, 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect reportedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza within the hostel enclave of the University of Cape Coast.
Investigators further indicate that the suspect, who claims to be a teacher but also works as a driver, transported Innocentia to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive. Her body was later found at the beach under circumstances that are still under active investigation.
Hutchland Beach has since become the focus of ongoing police inquiries following the discovery.
Police also revealed that a roommate of the deceased informed investigators that Innocentia had earlier called to say she was going out to meet an acquaintance. She reportedly left her room dressed casually but never returned, sparking concern among friends and family.
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances leading to the student’s death. The police have assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
