Radio personality and parliamentary candidate aspirant for the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, Okatakyie Afrifa, has been arrested following a dramatic incident at the Wiamoase polling centre during the constituency election.
According to reports, Afrifa and members of his campaign team arrived at the polling station with a court document seeking to halt the electoral process.
The move reportedly sparked tension at the polling centre, prompting officers of the Ghana Police Service to intervene to restore order.
Videos circulating on social media show police officers arresting some members of Afrifa’s team as the situation became chaotic. During the operation, officers were also seen firing warning shots into the air in an apparent attempt to disperse the crowd and prevent further disturbances.
It remains unclear where Okatakyie Afrifa was taken after the incident. However, reports indicate that he was escorted away from the polling station by police personnel.
The constituency election had reportedly been the subject of a legal challenge before the voting exercise. Despite the attempted intervention with the court document and the ensuing disturbance, the election process is said to have continued after police restored calm at the polling centre.
As of the time of publication, the Ghana Police Service had not released an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the reported arrest or whether any charges had been filed against the broadcaster and parliamentary hopeful.
