Mzbel has given a fresh account of the incident that interrupted her performance at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2005. She firmly rejected the long-standing claim that she was raped.
The ’16-Years’ singer said the incident happened after she had completed her scheduled performance but was repeatedly urged by the crowd to return to the stage.
Speaking to Kafui Dey, Mzbel explained that she eventually decided to leave the stage because several other performers, including Castro and Praye, were waiting backstage.
“I was on stage performing and after I was done, the crowd kept shouting last one, then I will start the performance again. The fourth time, I said no because Castro, Praye and other artistes were backstage,” she recalled.
Mzbel said she then told the audience that she would come back after the other artistes had performed and spend the rest of the night partying with them.
What happened next, she said, was completely unexpected.
According to the musician, an unidentified person grabbed her leg as she was coming down from the stage and began pulling her towards the crowd.
She recalled that there was a pool nearby and that she was screaming before eventually losing consciousness.
“As I was getting down from the stage, someone grabbed my leg and started pulling me into the crowd. There was a pool there, I was screaming and before I realised, I passed out,” she disclosed.
Mzbel was emphatic that she was not raped during the incident. She pointed to the large number of people present and her clothing at the time as part of her explanation for rejecting the allegation.
“It’s not possible for anyone to rape me because there were a lot of people and I was wearing leggings. There was never rape; nobody touched my private part,” she stated.

Rather than interpreting the incident as an intentional act of violence, Mzbel said she regarded it as an accident.
“I saw it as an accident, so it didn’t cause me any pain. I don’t think anyone deliberately came to the event centre to cause me pain,” she averred.
Despite her position on what happened, the musician said the KNUST incident continues to resurface whenever she finds herself at odds with critics or expresses views that attract disagreement.
She said some people have attempted to turn the incident into a weapon against her, but she has refused to allow it to define her.
“What happened in KNUST, 2005 doesn’t really bother me. People think that incident is something that is supposed to break me, so anytime they have issues with me, they bring it up.
“They will be saying I’m the one who went to KNUST and they raped me. It’s a human being that gets raped. I’m a human being and it’s not by choice,” she stated.
Mzbel further said she does not feel embarrassed by the incident and has little concern about people who attempt to use the rape allegation to ridicule her.
“If they see it as something that they have to bully me with, that I was raped, it doesn’t really bother me,” she emphasised.
