Several actors in the local movie industry which is mostly called Kumawood have talked against the name because they believe it is for a company so should not be used for the entire industry.

Top actors in the industry like Bill Asamoah, Nana Ama McBrown, Emelia Brobbey and many others have asked Ghanaians especially the media to stop tagging movies made in the local dialect as Kumawood Movies but Samuel Darko, CEO of Kumawood Multimedia, oganisers of the annual Kumawood and Akoben Movie Awards has asked moviemakers to accept the name and focus on other pressing issues affecting the industry instead of focusing on the name.

Speaking to Zionfelix on Radio Univers, Samdackus said idea always comes from an individual and it affects several people so these actors should stop saying the local movie industry should not be referred to as Kumawood. He further asked leaders of the industry to see whoever owns the name and make it the official title for the local movie industry.

“Leaders of our industry should sit down and accept the name for the industry. They should know that a name always comes from one person before everybody accepts it. The name Ghana was suggested by an individual and now the world knows this country as Ghana so why the fight over the name Kumawood?

When it comes to naming something, the person who first suggested the name doesn’t mater. If we think it best suits the project then we should take it. Leaders of the industry should have approached whoever brought the name to make it official for movies made in our local dialect.” Mr. Darko told Zionfelix on the station’s mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch.
