Barely a year after the death of Ghanaian highlife legend Daddy Lumba, fresh controversy has erupted over plans to mark his one-year anniversary.
Instead of a united front to honour his memory, the late singer’s family appears to be battling over key issues surrounding his upcoming commemoration.
Ahead of his one year anniversary, Akosua Brempomaa, a sister of the late musician has come out to explain why the family believes Daddy Lumba’s one-year anniversary cannot be observed at this time.
Speaking in a video circulating on social media, Akosua Brempomaa claimed that the family still does not know where Daddy Lumba was buried, making it impossible for them to perform the customary rites required under Ashanti tradition.
According to her, because the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, hailed from a royal Ashanti family, tradition demands that libation be poured at his burial site before any one-year remembrance can be held.
She stressed that without knowing his final resting place, the family has no customary right to organise or participate in the anniversary.
Akosua Brempomaa further alleged that another important royal custom, which she described as walling for royals, has also not been performed, insisting that the family would not allow greed or pressure to force them into rushing the anniversary.
She also disclosed that the matter has already been taken to court, where the family is seeking answers about Daddy Lumba’s burial location as well as accountability for finances related to his funeral.
According to her, individuals who were entrusted with organising the funeral must account for how everything was handled.
The grieving sister also argued that the family cannot proceed with the anniversary because no successor has yet been chosen to continue Daddy Lumba’s legacy, another important customary requirement in their view.
Expressing frustration over the ongoing dispute, Akosua Brempomaa alleged that some people had attempted to take control of matters concerning the late musician despite opposition from the family.
She maintained that although she and another female relative may be women, they have the full backing of the family’s elders and the family head, adding that they are leaving the matter in God’s hands.
Her only wish, she said, is for the family to finally know where Daddy Lumba was laid to rest.
