Veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong will be laid to rest through a structured three-day programme, as his family prepares to honour his memory and contribution to Ghana’s music industry.

A video circulating on social media from the family confirms that the farewell events will open with a wake at Asuofua Town Park on May 8, 2026. The same grounds will later host both the funeral and burial rites on May 9.

“We have planned that there will be a wake-keeping for Yaw Sarpong on May 8. The funeral and burial ceremony will be held on May 9, 2026, at Asuofua Town Park.

“On May 10, there will be a thanksgiving service at Sokoban, and after the church service, the family will meet to account for all expenses incurred during the funeral service,” the family said.

They are also extending an open invitation to the public to join them in paying final respects to the late gospel musician.

“We therefore invite all Ghanaians and sympathisers to attend and support us as we give our beloved Yaw Sarpong a final farewell,” they added.

Yaw Sarpong passed away on January 20, 2026, after a long illness. His death was confirmed by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis.

His influence in gospel music stretched across nearly 50 years, during which he became one of the genre’s most recognisable voices. His first album, “Adesrede”, released in 1981, set the stage for a catalogue of enduring songs including “Awurade Kasa”, “Tie Obiaa”, and “Wo Haw Ne Sen”.

He also founded the Asomafo gospel group, a collective widely credited with shaping the sound and direction of Akan gospel music in Ghana.
