Ghanaian entertainer and Talented Kids star DJ Switch has publicly criticised Ahafo Ano South West Member of Parliament Yakubu Mohammed over a viral video in which he told a schoolgirl that he would marry her when she grows up, describing the remarks as inappropriate and urging society to do more to protect children.
In a video shared on her social media platforms, DJ Switch said she was deeply disturbed after watching the footage, insisting that comments of that nature should never be directed at children, regardless of the speaker’s intentions.
Expressing her disappointment, the young DJ said the lawmaker’s statement should not be brushed aside as a harmless joke or defended as a reflection of African humour.
“I am genuinely disgusted. A grown man, a Member of Parliament, someone entrusted with leadership, looked at a little girl, a child, and said, ‘When you grow up, I’ll marry you.’ That’s not funny. That’s not charming. That is not African humour. That is completely inappropriate,” she stated.
DJ Switch questioned why many people responded to the incident with laughter instead of concern, arguing that society has become too comfortable with adults making romantic comments about children.
According to her, children should never be viewed as future spouses or be the subject of flirtatious remarks by adults, stressing that such behaviour should not be normalised under the guise of humour or cultural expression.
She also addressed those defending the Ahafo Ano South West MP on the grounds that he was merely joking, challenging them to consider why marriage would be the first thing an adult would mention when speaking to a young girl.
DJ Switch maintained that the controversy is not about political correctness but about safeguarding children and preserving their innocence.
She further noted that the issue extends beyond men, pointing out that some women also contribute to the problem by jokingly pairing children with future partners or placing them in imagined romantic relationships.
