Ghana’s movie industry has been plunged into mourning following the reported death of veteran Kumawood actor Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi, who has sadly passed away after a prolonged battle with kidney failure.

The heartbreaking news was first reported by Kumasi-based Akoma FM on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi’s health struggles became widely known in recent months after it emerged that he was battling end-stage kidney disease.

Reports indicated that he was undergoing regular dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant, with his treatment and surgery estimated to cost more than GH¢700,000.

His condition prompted a nationwide appeal for financial support, with several prominent figures in the Ghanaian movie industry stepping forward to help raise funds for his treatment.

Kumawood actor Kojo Nkansah LilWin donated GH¢10,000 towards his medical expenses, while veteran actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu contributed GH¢50,000 and passionately appealed to Ghanaians to support the actor in his fight for survival.

The support also came from outside the entertainment industry. The Member of Parliament for Juaben, Francis Owusu-Akyaw, donated GH¢20,000, which was presented on his behalf by actress Matilda Asare as efforts intensified to help the veteran actor receive the life-saving kidney transplant.

Despite the overwhelming generosity, prayers and support from colleagues, friends and fans, Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi sadly succumbed to the illness.
