Ghanaian rapper Medikal has shared his thoughts on Black Sherif winning Artiste of the Year at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, saying the achievement did not surprise him because he believes he played a part in shaping the young star’s journey.
During a discussion on Okay FM with Nana Romeo, Medikal spoke about the connection he sees between his own music and the themes Black Sherif often explores in his songs. According to the rapper, Black Sherif had been a listener of his music long before fame found him.
He recalled stumbling upon an old video of Black Sherif from his underground days, where the award-winning artiste openly expressed interest in collaborating with him.
“I no see the video when he did it. I saw it after he came into the limelight. He wanted a collaboration, and I mean Blacko being a fan of my music is not far fetched, he’s also saying the same thing I’m saying in my music, so I’m happy he won the award,” Medikal stated.
Medikal explained that his comments were not meant to diminish Black Sherif’s success, but rather to highlight the influence he feels he has had on the musician’s growth and artistic direction.
The rapper, who also earned a nomination in the Artiste of the Year category, said Black Sherif’s triumph is something he proudly embraces because he believes he inspired him in one way or another.
He also praised the new generation of musicians for openly acknowledging the artistes they admired while growing up. For Medikal, watching younger acts rise through the industry after drawing inspiration from established names is rewarding, which is why he insists Black Sherif’s victory was “not far-fetched.”
