Mrs Joana Quaye has filed an appeal against a High Court ruling that dissolved her marriage to Ghanaian businessman Richard Nii Armah Quaye and determined the distribution of their marital assets.
The Notice of Appeal, filed on April 1, 2026, was submitted on her behalf by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame.
The appeal seeks to overturn aspects of the judgment delivered by Justice Justin Kofi Dorgu, who presided over the case as an Additional High Court Judge at the Family Court.
According to the filing, Mrs Quaye is challenging the legal basis of the High Court’s decision, particularly regarding the classification and distribution of marital property.
Her legal team argues that the trial judge committed a “fundamental error of law” by failing to recognise that all movable and immovable assets—including company shares—were acquired during the marriage and should therefore be treated as joint marital property.
They contend that such assets ought to be distributed equitably between both parties.
In the initial ruling, the High Court awarded Mrs Quaye one-third ownership of a matrimonial home located in Dansoman, with the remaining two-thirds granted to Mr Quaye.
Additionally, she was awarded a lump sum of GH¢300,000—far below the GH¢50 million she had originally requested.
The court also granted her custody of their three children, while Mr Quaye was given visitation rights, including access during school vacations.
The appeal now shifts the case to the Court of Appeal, where Mrs Quaye is seeking a reassessment of both the financial settlement and the division of assets.
