For years, veteran Ghanaian musician and entrepreneur Mzbel has never hidden her strong opinions about marriage by making it clear that it is not an institution she finds appealing.

She has constantly stated that marriage comes with expectations and responsibilities that she is unwilling to accept.

Speaking in a recent interview with Zionfelix on the Uncut show, Mzbel reiterated her long-held stance that she sees no reason to get married.

The musician explained that, in her view, there are no benefits to marriage. She argued that many of the duties traditionally expected of wives resemble what she described as modern-day slavery.

According to Mzbel, she cannot understand why some men expect women to wake up early to sweep, dust the house, clean rooms, prepare breakfast, and constantly cater to their needs. She suggested that any man who expects her to carry out such chores simply because she is his partner must be mad.

Questioning such expectations, Mzbel wondered whether the mothers of such men were no longer around, arguing that caring for a child is a mother’s responsibility and not that of a girlfriend or lover.

“A man must be mad if he expects me to sweep, serve him breakfast, and clean for him. Doesn’t he have a mother? Your mother is supposed to take care of you, so if you are no longer with her, then you have to take care of yourself,” she stated.

The singer stressed that these beliefs are exactly why marriage is not an option for her.

That’s why marriage is not for me because I cannot do marriage. I see it as free slavery,” she added.

Mzbel further revealed that she would not encourage young women to rush into marriage, maintaining that the institution often places unfair burdens on women.

According to her, she enjoys being independent and making decisions for herself without having to conform to expectations she does not agree with.

I won’t encourage young ladies to get married because I see it as free slavery. As for me, I will never get married. I am my own boss. I am both the father and the mother. I can be in a relationship, alright, but the moment a man asks me to do those chores, it’s over between us,” she said.
