Keche Andrew has commented on the flooding that has once again hit parts of Accra, arguing that the crisis is being driven as much by poor sanitation habits as by heavy rainfall.

In a video shared on TikTok, the Ghanaian musician used humour to express his frustration over indiscriminate waste disposal, joking that he wanted to visit a police station to find out whether citizens could be granted a special license to confront people who litter.

“I want to go to the police stations and ask if they can give a license to beat someone, because at this point we all have to be self-police to stop the flood,” he said.

Keche Andrew went on to suggest that anyone seen dumping refuse into gutters, drains, or water bodies should be apprehended, punished, and then handed over to the police to discourage others from engaging in similar acts.

“When you see anyone dump refuse in gutters, in cars, or into water bodies, we catch them and beat them up. Afterwards, you take them to the police station, that’s what we need to do,” he said.

Although delivered in a humorous tone, his comments reflected his belief that recurring floods in the capital are largely the result of human actions. He maintained that blocked drains caused by indiscriminate dumping have become a major factor behind the widespread flooding experienced whenever heavy rains fall.

The musician criticised people who carelessly throw rubbish into gutters and drainage channels, saying such behaviour continues to choke the city’s waterways and reduce their ability to carry stormwater.

He also took issue with residents who wait until it starts raining before disposing of household waste into flowing water, assuming the rain will wash it away. According to him, the practice only adds to the growing sanitation problem and worsens flooding across Accra.

“Our attitudes are part of the recent floods; we dump refuse anywhere,” Andrew pointed out.
