Nana Ama McBrown has challenged how red carpet invitations are handled at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, arguing that appearance at such events should not be treated as an automatic free obligation for celebrities.

Speaking on Onua Show Time, the actress pointed out that attending major entertainment events comes with high personal costs, particularly for guests who are neither nominees nor performers and therefore receive no direct return from the event itself.

She explained that many invited personalities are left to shoulder the full expense of styling, clothing, and preparation simply to make an appearance, a situation she believes is unfair.

“TGMA can’t invite me to a red carpet while I don’t have a song. They’re aware it’s expensive to show up,” the actress stated.

McBrown also looked back at earlier editions of the awards, recalling that organisers once helped ease the burden by providing fabric to invited guests, which allowed them to create bespoke outfits for the occasion.

According to her, that initiative not only reduced costs but also elevated the fashion stakes on the red carpet, making it a more engaging spectacle.

“I remember some time ago, they used to add cloth to their invitation. I even sewed the cloth and was crowned best dressed on the red carpet. There was a cash prize on it, so I won the dollars,” she recounted.

She added that such incentives naturally encouraged greater effort and creativity, turning the red carpet into a more competitive style showcase rather than a routine appearance.

“That made the red carpet very competitive and nice because you wouldn’t just go there; you had to show up all glamorous,” she shared.

McBrown clarified that her comments were directed at non-nominated guests and personalities who attend primarily for support and entertainment value rather than official participation in the awards.

From that perspective, she argued, attendance is optional, and organisers should consider offering motivation or incentives if they want consistent turnout from such guests.

“I’m talking from those who don’t have songs and those who won’t get any nominations’ point of view. We just show up for the entertainment and all the same, we can decide to entertain ourselves in our homes, but we still go there,” she noted.

She concluded firmly that in her own case, appearance would require compensation.

“I was invited, but I didn’t reply to the message. They have to pay me to show up.”
