Ama K Abebrese Chastises TV Stations For Pirating Ghanaian Films

0

Popular Ghanaian filmmaker Ama K Abebrese has voiced her frustration over the rampant and persistent piracy of local films by Ghanaian television stations, warning that the practice is crippling the country’s already fragile movie industry.

Appearing on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday, June 14, Ama shared her own encounter with copyright infringement involving her award-winning film The Burial of Kojo. Despite its official premiere on Netflix on March 31, 2019, she was shocked to discover the film airing without permission on a local TV station just a month later.

“I don’t know where this TV station was. And I remember we hadn’t even been paid by Netflix for the film,” she said. “It was a struggle to make that film. We couldn’t find investors, so we resorted to Kickstarter. Then a TV station showed it without permission. And we actually contacted the TV station, and the person we contacted started playing dumb. He even blocked my number.”

Ama recounted that this wasn’t an isolated incident. During her tenure as Head of Productions at Viasat 1, she oversaw the legal acquisition of screening rights for the Harry Potter films, only to witness rival stations broadcasting the same movies without authorization.

“This is something I’ve been dealing with since 2012. Nothing has been done. People feel like they can do whatever they want because they know someone in power,” the Ghanaian filmmaker lamented.

Her frustration extended to the general disregard for the arts by decision-makers in the country. She pointed to the systemic neglect of Ghana’s creative sector as a major obstacle to progress.

“I feel like in Ghana, the arts are really not taken seriously. Especially by our lawmakers. They see it as just entertainment,” she added.

Ama stressed that unless piracy is aggressively addressed and copyright laws are properly enforced, local filmmakers will remain discouraged, and the industry will continue to stagnate.

“People say that the Ghanaian movie industry is dead and that it’s not going anywhere. But when people have been investing their own money, not only are you not supporting them, but you’re killing the industry by pirating it. We’re our own worst enemies,” she said.

Ama K Abebrese concluded with a grim but candid observation about the state’s failure to act: “So, until something is done, we will talk about it every two or three months, and they’ll keep doing it.”

OB Amponsah Condemns National Service Scandal, Says Corrupt Officials ‘Washed Funds Like Ozark Cast’

Ghanaian comedian OB Amponsah has publicly denounced the alleged GH₵548 million embezzlement scandal at the National Service Secretariat (NSS), describing it as yet another glaring failure of political oversight under President Akufo-Addo.

In a recent Facebook post, Amponsah expressed outrage at reports that officials allegedly diverted hundreds of millions of cedis through payroll fraud, even as National Service personnel endured months without pay.

“This and many more are some of the corrupt deeds that went right under Akufo-Addo’s nose. While National Service Personnel remained unpaid, these greedy thieves were siphoning and washing Ghanaian funds like they were a cast in Ozark,” he wrote, referencing the crime-laden Netflix series.

The scandal, exposed by Ghana’s Attorney General following preliminary investigations by the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) taskforce, revealed that over GH₵548 million had been misappropriated via ghost names on the NSS payroll.

Ghanaian actress and entrepreneur Fella Makafui has shared the emotional story behind her rise to fame, revealing the setbacks, betrayal, and personal strength that shaped her early career.

In an interview with Pulse Ghana, the celebrated star recounted her difficult transition from the quiet town of Anfoega in the Volta Region to the bustling city of Accra, where she dreamt of becoming a successful actress.

Growing up, Fella helped her mother sell bread, and though her childhood was modest, she harboured ambitious goals.

Determined to change her story, she saved enough money to make the move to Accra in pursuit of stardom. Initially, she stayed with a close friend from her senior high school days.
However, that arrangement ended abruptly and painfully.

“I was staying with my close senior high friend, and one day she just said I should leave,” Fella revealed. “Nothing happened, we never had any issue, but one day she just woke up and said, ‘you got to go.’”

Left with nowhere to stay and no resources, Fella was forced to return to the Volta Region. But instead of letting the experience break her, she used it as fuel to push harder for her dreams.

Upon her return to Accra, Fella’s persistence paid off when she landed her breakout role in the popular youth series YOLO, which catapulted her into the limelight and opened doors to numerous opportunities in acting and business.

Now a successful actress, mother, and entrepreneur, Fella Makafui says her journey is a testament to resilience and self-belief. Her story continues to inspire many young Ghanaians who face similar challenges in pursuit of their aspirations.
