Mix Master Garzy Schools Industry On What It Truly Means To Be A Music Producer

0

Popular sound engineer and producer Mix Master Garzy is urging a clearer understanding of what it takes to earn the title “music producer.”

In an interview on Hitz FM, he cautioned that the term is being thrown around far too casually in the industry.

Garzy, whose career spans collaborations with some of Ghana’s biggest musical names and international acts, drew a firm line between being a beat maker and being a complete producer.

“Before you call yourself a producer, you have to know how to produce, how to make beats, how to engineer audio, meaning proper recording as a recording engineer. You need to know how to mix, how to direct, how to write, maybe even how to sing. All of these are part of being a full producer,” he said.

For Garzy, many who label themselves as producers are only contributing a fraction of what the role actually entails.

“Some people are just beat makers, some are mixing engineers, others are recording engineers,” he added.

He emphasized that a full-fledged producer is someone who understands and contributes to every stage of the music-making process, not just one. That includes everything from conceptualizing and arranging to engineering and even performing if necessary.

“Some people are just beat makers, but because they can record, they assume they can mix too. It’s time they understand the difference,” he said.

Reflecting on his own journey, Garzy credited his versatility to early exposure and training in all aspects of music production. He said his ability to handle everything from beat-making to engineering is why he truly earns his name.

“Where I’m coming from, I was fortunate to learn all of these skills together, and that’s why I’m ‘Mix Master Garzy,’” he explained.

James Gardiner Laments Lack Of Support For Ghanaian Film Industry

0

Ghanaian actor and Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), James Gardiner, has expressed concern over the lack of local support for the Ghanaian film industry. According to him, Ghanaians’ preference for foreign content is a major obstacle to the growth and appreciation of local movies.

Appearing on TV3’s The Afternoon Show on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Gardiner explained that inadequate patronage through streaming, viewership, and ticket sales has significantly contributed to the industry’s decline.

“In Ghana because we don’t have the numbers, the problem with support is everywhere, I get it but ratio wise, Ghanaians don’t really like to support, I say this in every interview I do,” Gardiner said.

He noted that even when Ghanaian filmmakers produce high-quality content, the audience response remains underwhelming. Gardiner attributed this trend to a misplaced sense of value, where anything produced outside the country is often deemed superior.

“We’ve placed so much in foreign value and when I say foreign, I’m not even talking about America or Canada, it could be just outside of Ghana. We belittle our very own meanwhile when we go to these places that we are placing so much value on; they also hail us,” he said.
“I feel like people still haven’t given Ghanaian producers the second chance,” the actor added.

Gardiner also drew comparisons with Nigeria’s thriving film industry, highlighting how strong local support and higher viewership numbers there contribute to commercial success.

“Nigeria is way more advanced; I’m not even going to lie. Their numbers play a very huge role when it comes to the commercial side. There’s a business side of filmmaking not just the passion. If it’s for passion then you just do and not care what numbers you will get.
But in Nigeria because they have the traction, once they use the right tools, the kind of money that they make from these films is so huge that they can afford the next two major projects,” Gardiner explained.

Looking ahead, Gardiner emphasized that the NFA is working on several initiatives aimed at restructuring and revitalizing the industry to ensure sustainable growth and broader audience engagement.

KSM Demands Transparent Breakdown Of New Fuel Levy, Calls For Quarterly Reports From Government

Popular Ghanaian satirist and veteran broadcaster Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) is calling for greater government accountability following the introduction of Ghana’s new GH¢1 per litre fuel levy. In a message directed at Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, KSM urged quarterly public disclosures detailing how funds from the levy and similar taxes are being collected and spent.

KSM emphasized that most Ghanaians are not opposed to taxation in principle but grow skeptical when officials fail to provide clear updates on how public money is used.

“No Ghanaian I know is afraid to pay taxes. They are only hesitant because they don’t know what politicians do with the money. Tell them, ‘this is how much we are getting from the levy, this is how much we have spent and where we have spent the money.’ Let it not be on paper; let it be transparent,” he said in a video posted on YouTube.

His comments follow Parliament’s recent passage of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which introduced the GH¢1 charge on each litre of fuel sold. According to the Finance Ministry, the policy is designed to help clear over $3.1 billion in energy sector debt as of March 2025 and to guarantee a reliable electricity supply.

Officials estimate that the levy will raise GH¢5.7 billion annually, intended for paying arrears, reducing legacy debt burdens, and securing fuel for power generation.

But while the government argues the tax is a necessary move to stabilize the energy sector, it has drawn backlash from civil society groups. Critics argue that the levy risks exacerbating living costs, especially in a fragile economic climate where transport and commodity prices are already strained.

Opponents warn that even a modest hike in fuel prices can trigger inflationary ripple effects across the economy, worsening the financial burden on ordinary citizens.

KSM, however, believes the public’s willingness to comply with such measures hinges not on the amount charged, but on how openly the government explains where every cedi goes.
