A State Transport Company (STC) bus was reportedly swept away by powerful floodwaters on Monday morning at the Achimota–Abofu stretch, following hours of heavy rainfall that left several parts of Accra submerged and major road networks severely disrupted.

The incident occurred after continuous downpour triggered widespread flooding, turning sections of the busy corridor into dangerous water channels that made it difficult for vehicles to navigate.

Eyewitness Accounts Describe Panic at Scene

With reported confirmed to Zionfelix News, eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the STC bus was overwhelmed by fast-rising floodwaters, which pushed the vehicle off its path and swept it along the flooded roadway.

The situation reportedly caused panic among residents and road users in the area, as other motorists struggled to avoid being trapped in similar conditions.

Heavy Rains Paralyze Achimota–Abofu Corridor

The Achimota–Abofu enclave is among several flood-prone areas in Accra that were heavily affected by the overnight rainfall.

Other parts of the capital also experienced severe flooding, with major disruptions recorded along:

  • Kaneshie and Mallam corridors
  • Achimota–Ofankor stretch
  • Accra–Kasoa highway
  • Kwame Nkrumah Interchange enclave
  • Spintex and Madina adjoining roads

Floodwaters rendered several routes impassable, leaving commuters stranded for hours during the Monday morning rush.

Transport Disrupted, Commuters Stranded

Public transport services were significantly affected as drivers abandoned routes deemed unsafe, while others were forced to halt operations due to submerged roads and poor visibility.

Many commuters were left stranded at bus stops across Accra, with some vehicles partially submerged in floodwaters.

The situation intensified congestion on alternative routes, further worsening movement within the capital.

Growing Concern Over Recurring Flood Incidents

The latest incident adds to growing concerns about Accra’s recurring flooding challenges, particularly during periods of prolonged rainfall.

Residents have repeatedly called for improved drainage systems and stricter enforcement of building regulations along waterways to reduce the impact of seasonal floods.

Authorities Urged to Strengthen Emergency Response

Although emergency agencies continue to respond to flood-related incidents across the city, the latest case at Achimota–Abofu highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in key transport corridors.

Authorities are expected to assess the situation as part of broader flood mitigation efforts aimed at reducing future disruptions and safeguarding public transport operations.
