Scenes of sorrow, honour, and celebration of a remarkable legacy filled the atmosphere at Asuofua Town Park in Kumasi on Saturday, May 9, 2026, as family, friends, colleagues, and sympathisers gathered for the final funeral rites of legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.

The late founder and leader of the Asomafo Band was given a befitting farewell in a ceremony that attracted some of the biggest names from Ghana’s entertainment, business, and religious circles.

Among the high-profile personalities spotted at the funeral grounds were business mogul Osei Kwame Despite, actress and media personality and actress Nana Ama McBrown, gospel musicians Broda Sammy, Great Ampong, Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Elder Mireku, Jack Alolome, and the iconic gospel trio Daughters of Glorious Jesus.

Also, his spiritual father, Bishop J.Y. Adu and several respected religious leaders were also present to support the bereaved family.

One personality whose presence caught many people by surprise was award-winning rapper Sarkodie. Even though Sarkodie is not known for making appearances at many public gatherings, he quietly showed up to pay his final respect to a man he deeply respected and shared a bond with.

The rapper arrived clad in black mourning cloth in the typical Akan style and sympathized with the kids of the late singer and the entire family.

Videos from the funeral grounds showed a heavily attended event as thousands of mourners gathered to honour one of the most respected gospel voices Ghana has ever produced.

A thanksgiving service in honour of the late gospel icon is expected to take place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Sokoban-Ampayoo.
