Lilwin Says Daddy Lumba’s ‘Yentie Obiaa’ Helped Him Overcome Ritual Allegations

0

Kumawood actor, Kwadwo Nkansah, well-known as Lilwin, has said he leaned on Daddy Lumba’s classic hit “Yentie Obiaa” to withstand damaging accusations that he used money rituals to fuel his career.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Lilwin revealed that the song’s message of persistence and focus kept him grounded during one of the most difficult chapters of his career. The controversy erupted earlier this year, just before the premiere of his film “Ibrahim Traore”.

The storm began when gospel singer Diana Asamoah publicly attacked Lilwin’s spiritual mentor, Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah, branding him a “fake man of God.” Lilwin hit back, insulting Asamoah and even questioning her gender. In retaliation, she accused him of performing human sacrifices to promote his movies.

“The accusations hurt me very much, but they made me stronger because anytime I listened to Daddy Lumba’s ‘Yentie Obiaa’, I was motivated to remain focused. I went on with the premiere and it was successful,” Lilwin said.

Despite the heated exchanges and online trolling, the actor’s premiere went ahead smoothly.

Among the notable attendees were the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana, H.E. David Kabre, accompanied by his military delegation, the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, several industry colleagues including Vivian Jill, Dr. Likee, Kyekyeku, and musician Kweku Flick, as well as prominent business figures.

Lil Win Issues Apology to Colleagues Over Recent Outbursts

Veteran Kumawood actor and comedian Kojo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, has publicly apologised to his colleagues in the Ghanaian film industry following a series of controversial outbursts.

In a new video, Lilwin expressed deep regret for the harsh words he uttered in recent weeks while promoting his much-anticipated movie, Captain Ibrahim: The Last African Hero.

According to Lil Win, the heated comments were made out of frustration as he struggled under intense pressure from the demands of the movie’s premiere, coupled with what he described as a lack of support from some industry colleagues.

“I am begging my loved ones. You all saw how I was suffering before I premiered my movie. You had people not showing support but who were quick to say negative things about me whenever my issues came out. This is what made me react that way because there was pressure on me,” he explained.

Lil Win admitted that, in hindsight, some of his statements were regrettable and should never have been made.

He urged those who may have been hurt by his remarks to forgive him as he works towards mending strained relationships in the industry.

The actor’s heartfelt apology has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans praising his humility for admitting his mistakes, while others called on his colleagues to embrace unity and support each other in pushing Ghana’s movie industry forward.

Returns Are Not Guaranteed – Socrate Safo On the Realities Of Filmmaking

0

Socrate Safo, one of Ghana’s most seasoned filmmakers, says the shine of the entertainment industry often hides a harsh truth: success is never guaranteed.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Safo explained that, unlike other professions where progress can be predictable, the creative sector is filled with risks and uncertainty. He recalled a moment from his early career when he desperately wanted a Nigerian actor in one of his productions but couldn’t afford to pay him.

“I would love to be in the movie. I said, ‘Okay, come, but I would not pay you, but I would give you the Nigerian right,’” Safo recalled.

He revealed that instead of offering cash, he handed over the distribution rights for Nigeria, allowing the actor to profit or lose from sales in that market. According to Safo, such deals are not unusual in show business.

Filmmakers, he said, often rely on these arrangements because paying top actors upfront is impossible. Instead, actors are offered equity or a share of distribution revenues, a system that mirrors practices in Hollywood.

“To do the distribution in Nigeria and take the money. It happens, Hollywood, it’s done. That’s how people say that actors do get shares. He charges you $150m, and you don’t have it, so he has equity in the movie, so as you are distributing, then he is also getting a percentage in the movie,” Safo explained.

He stressed that entertainment investments are always a gamble.

“I give him the full right, so he can sell as many as he wants and he can also make losses. One thing about entertainment is that returns are not guaranteed,” Socrate Safo added.

Ghana’s Movie Industry Still Has The Talent And Stories To Thrive – Adjetey Anang

0

Veteran Ghanaian actor, Adjetey Anang, has said the nation’s movie industry may be struggling, but it is far from dead. He believes the sector, though dimmed compared to its golden years, still holds untapped potential that could spark a revival.

“We have the gift and talent and the content necessary to succeed. We need to show the outside world that we have valuable content. While capital is important, a strong storyline can still carry a film even if we don’t have huge financial backing,” Anang said in an interview with Asaasepa FM.

The actor recalled a time when Ghana’s film scene thrived, with nearly 50 movies being released in a single month. Today, however, he noted that output has fallen sharply, with filmmakers often unable to produce even half that number due to financial constraints.

“We are still producing films, but it’s not as robust as it once was. In the past, let’s say we used to churn out around 50 movies in a month, but now we only manage to produce half of that due to lack of capital. Many people find that after covering production costs, the returns from the movies are minimal,” he explained.

Anang stressed that money remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges. Investors are reluctant to back productions because of the low returns, and even completed films often struggle to generate profit once revenue is split with cinema chains such as Silverbird.

“There are also challenges, such as sharing proceeds with Silverbird Cinema. If we had more venues available for premiering movies, it could benefit our industry, as healthy competition is important,” he said.

To address this, Anang urged the establishment of additional movie centers nationwide. He believes expanding screening venues would reduce the dominance of major cinema chains, create competition, and open doors for more filmmakers to showcase their work.

However, he argued that financial backing alone is not enough. Quality storytelling and research, he said, must remain central if Ghanaian films are to capture audiences locally and abroad.

“We need to focus on improving the quality of our work by putting more research into our projects. Once something is released, it can reach a global audience. These are some of the challenges that make it seem like the industry is struggling, but we are still pushing,” Adjetey Anang emphasized.
