Ghanaians must learn to support local artists – Stonebwoy states

0

Ghanaian dancehall star, Stonebwoy, has expressed his frustration over the constant negativity he faces from a section of Ghanaians, particularly on social media.

Speaking candidly on the Afrobeats Podcast, the award-winning musician emotionally talked about how a lighthearted moment on TikTok Live with Nigerian influencer Peller spiraled into unnecessary controversy back home.

Stonebwoy described the situation as “heartbreaking,” emphasizing that such a mentality should no longer exist among Ghanaians in 2025.

He recounted how the interaction with Peller was entirely unplanned. While on a live session thanking fans for their support, the young influencer joined the stream.

“I didn’t even recognize the name at first. I declined it twice before finally accepting. And then, we started vibing. I saw an opportunity to turn it into a promotional moment, so I joked about flying him to London,” Stonebwoy explained.

What was intended to be a fun and engaging moment quickly turned sour as some Ghanaians took to social media to criticize the interaction.

Stonebwoy lamented that instead of capitalizing on the positive energy, he and his team had to spend time defending the moment, ultimately losing its momentum.

“Instead of pushing the moment forward, we now have to defend it. And by the time we finish defending, the momentum is lost,” he said.

This incident is not the first time Stonebwoy has faced unwarranted criticism from his compatriots.

He recalled a similar situation at the Grammys, where he introduced himself to a global star, only to be ridiculed by some Ghanaians instead of being celebrated for seizing a networking opportunity.

“It’s interesting how the negative narrative always becomes more popular. That’s the sad part. We should be elevating our own people, not dragging them down,” he emphasized.

Stonebwoy’s comments highlight a broader issue within Ghana’s entertainment industry, where artists often face harsh criticism and negativity from their own people, even as they strive to put the country on the global map.

He urged Ghanaians to change their mindset and rally behind their artists, noting that every positive step taken by a Ghanaian artist benefits the entire music industry and the nation as a whole.

“We should be supportive of our own. When we win, Ghana wins,” he stated.

Prophet Kofi Oduro Criticises Celebrities for Flaunting Luxury Cars, Calls It “Vanity”

In a fiery sermon, Prophet Kofi Oduro, the General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, criticized celebrities and individuals who flaunt their luxury vehicles on social media, labeling the act vain and spiritually misguided.

The renowned clergyman, known for his bold and uncompromising stance on moral and spiritual issues, urged his congregation to prioritise their faith over material possessions.

During his sermon, which was shared widely on social media, Prophet Oduro expressed strong disapproval of what he described as the “worship of luxury,” particularly high-end cars like Rolls-Royces.

He questioned the obsession with such vehicles, stating that they are merely made of “metal and foam” and hold no real value in the grand scheme of life.

“I showed my daughter cars such as the Lamborghini Urus, Rolls-Royce Spectre, and others… Rolls-Royce is rubbish. It is made of metal and foam—nothing else. Yet, people in this country are worshipping cars. Anyone who owns these cars and becomes arrogant is not wise, and I am serious about this,” he declared.

Prophet Oduro did not mince words as he criticised those who own extravagant cars and display them arrogantly, rather than embracing humility.

He called out the growing trend of materialism, particularly among celebrities, and warned against the dangers of pride and vanity.

“Calm down, for everything is vanity upon vanity. If any man should boast about something, it should be about how they know Christ and their willingness to serve Him, no matter the situation,” he added.

The clergyman’s message resonated with many of his followers, who took to social media to express their support for his stance. However, his comments also sparked debate, with some arguing that owning luxury items is not inherently wrong as long as one remains humble and grateful.

“Kumawood hasn’t collapsed” – Berma Bediide argues

Renowned Kumawood actor, Berma Bediide, has strongly refuted claims that Ghana’s movie industry, particularly the Kumawood sector, has collapsed.

In a recent interview, Bediide fired back at critics, asserting that the industry is still very much alive and active.

He urged Ghanaians to disregard what he described as baseless speculations about the demise of the local film sector.

Bediide, a well-known face in the Kumawood movie scene, argued that only those with a “myopic view” would claim that the industry has collapsed.

He emphasized that such statements are far from the truth and do not reflect the current state of Ghana’s film industry.

According to him, the industry is still thriving, with many actors, producers, and crew members actively working on new projects.

The actor also took a swipe at critics, suggesting that anyone who believes the industry has collapsed is either not watching television or does not own a smartphone.

He implied that such individuals are out of touch with the reality of the industry’s progress and the content being produced.

“People who say the industry has collapsed are not paying attention. If you have a TV or a smartphone, you’ll see that Kumawood and Ghanaian movies are still very much alive. We are working hard to keep the industry moving forward,” Bediide stated.

Dumsor didn’t cause Kumawood’s collapse – Fiifi Colema argues

0

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Fiifi Coleman has refuted claims that persistent power outages, popularly known as dumsor, were the main factor behind the decline of Ghana’s movie industry, particularly the once-thriving Kumawood sector.

Speaking on Onua Showbiz with Naana Kwame Gyan, Coleman argued that the industry’s challenges stem from deeper issues beyond electricity shortages.

Coleman emphasized that film sets had long relied on standby generators even before dumsor became a widespread problem.

“Way back, even before dumsor, there were always generators on standby on sets, so I don’t know why or how my colleagues in Kumawood are tying dumsor to the decline of the industry,” he stated.

His comments challenge the widely held belief that erratic power supply was the primary cause of the industry’s struggles.

The filmmaker acknowledged the pivotal role Kumasi played in Ghana’s film industry, describing it as the hub of movie production and a major source of entertainment.

However, he noted that the industry’s decline was partly due to creative stagnation.

“A time came when it was the same old storylines, and people became fed up with it,” he explained.

Coleman suggested that the repetitive nature of Kumawood movies, coupled with a lack of innovation, led to a loss of audience interest over time.

While dumsor may have posed logistical challenges, Coleman’s remarks highlight the need for the industry to address underlying issues such as storytelling quality and creativity. His insights call for a renewed focus on originality and innovation to revive Ghana’s film industry and restore its position as a leading source of entertainment in Africa.
