“Yes, We’ve Called Krobos But Never Begged Them Not To Take The Case To Court”

Kaywa

Camp of music producer Kaywa have admitted that they have received ”A Notice of Intention To Sue” letter from Kloma Hengme, a Krobo youth group over  Kul Songx ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ song.

Arnold Asamoah Baidoo, PRO for Kaywa speaking on Hitz FM Thursday morning disclosed that they contacted the youth of Krobo telling them that they have received the letter. He quickly added that they did not plead for them not to take the case to court when they contacted them because their lawyer is studying the matter.

“Because somebody took his time to write such a long letter, it is always fair and respectful to acknowledge the receipt of the letter and that is what our lawyer has done. Our lawyer has acknowledged the fact that he has received the letter and he will come over and also express our stands on the situation. It is not to succumb to the plenty requirements they stated in the letter.” Arnold told KMJ, host of the show.

The legal counsel of Kloma Hengme led by Dr Kwadjo Appiagyei-Atuah, A Specialized Human Rights & International Lawyer, has on Wednesday served ”A Notice of Intention To Sue” to Michael Owusu Addo (Sarkodie), David Kojo Kyei (Kaywa) and Kurl Songx over the roles they played in denigrating and assassinating the image of Krobo women and the whole Krobo nation at large.

The legal document served to the three spelt out six (6) conditions they must satisfy or be sued at the court of law.

Among these demands are the issuance of ”Immediate Order” to the relevant media houses to halt playing the song on their air waves, Expunge the portion of the lyrics or completely ban the use of the song from the air waves, Write an unreseved apology to the Chiefs and People of the Krobo area, and also pay a compensation of Two Million Ghana Cedis (Ghc 2,000,000) to the Krobo people.

‘Prospective Investors Always Want A ‘Side-Dish’’ – Feli Nuna Reveals

4

Ghanaian diva, Feli Nuna has detailed to Spyderlee Entertainment TV some of her challenges as a female in the music industry.

Speaking with Princepatt Makafui Amedume, host of the Hot Gist on Spyderlee Entertainment TV on Friday morning, Feli Nuna has advised her female colleagues to be very careful with men who demand for sex in exchange for favors.

‘Coming up, you meet a lot of people who offer to help you and things…definitely; they don’t want to help you for free. Using my personal experience, with people who offered to help, definitely you were going to get returns in the end because it’s an investment, but they always want a ‘side dish,’ and it’s not the best. That’s one of the challenges I faced before hitting the limelight. It made things a bit hard because if you don’t go their way, you have to wait for a proper opportunity or fight harder. I want to tell all the young girls coming up to believe in yourself and the right opportunity will avail itself. Don’t fall into traps; it’s easily avoidable,’ she said

When asked by the host to detail some of the challenges that are hindering the growth of the Ghanaian music industry, Feli Nuna noted that lack of unity is a contributory factor to the music industry’s stunted growth.

To explain further, she stated that, ‘we need more unity. What I admire about our Nigerian artistes is they are very united. Even from noticing from my Instagram page, I noticed that when a Nigerian artiste releases a song, you see a lot of reposts but even in Ghana, when I’m releasing a song and I send it out that ‘please put it on your page for me,’ it’s a problem because everybody wants to focus on theirs but the thing is, we are growing together.’

She went on to use the proverbial broom adage to explain that there’s strength in a united broom which is not easily broken.

‘To be at the top is very boring and lonely even though you ‘chop’ a lot of money.’

Feli Nuna ended by calling on corporate bodies to invest more in the industry.

Kurl Songx c/o The Producer
Kaywa Studios
Tema

Dear Sir,

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO SUE

I write in my capacity as the legal representative of the Kloma Hengme Association, a Krobo heritage and advocacy group whose mission is to project Krobo values as the basis to promote the development of the Krobo people.

My brief is that about two weeks, you came up with a song captioned “Jennifer Lomotey” which featured Michael Owusu Addo (aka and hereinafter, Sarkodie) and which song was produced by David Kojo Kyei (aka Kaywa).

A line in the song attributed to Sarkodie reads: “Krobo nii baa papa a ahweneɛ da ne sisi. Ɔkɔmfo Anɔkye de adwaman no abɔ ne dua” which literally translates as “A noble Krobo lady with beads around her waist who has been cursed by
Okomfo Anokye with promiscuity.”

This lyrics is founded on a myth and in this case, this myth is created to cast aspersions on the Krobo people. They are therefore prejudiced and discriminatory, contrary to article 17(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana which provides that “[a] person shall not be discriminated against on grounds of […] ethnic origin […]”

The Constitution goes on further to define discrimination as “to give different treatment to different persons attributable only or mainly to their respective descriptions by […] place of origin […] whereby persons of one description are subjected to disabilities or restrictions to which persons of another description are not made subject or are granted privileges or advantages which are not granted to persons of another description.”

Thus, by singling out the Krobos for ridicule it has subjected them to disabilities or restrictions which other ethnic groups are not similarly subjected to because it seeks to create a barrier to fair treatment and equal opportunity for the Krobos in general. Yet, article 35(5) of the same Constitution also enjoins the State to “actively promote the integration of the peoples of Ghana and prohibit discrimination and prejudice on the grounds of place of origin, circumstances of birth, ethnic origin …” among others.

Your actions therefore are a violation of the attempts being made by the State to promote ethnic cohesion among Ghanaians.

Additionally, my client finds the song offensive, insensitive and as tantamount to damaging their image and reputation.

It will be recalled that not long ago in Rwanda music, among others, was used to turn one ethnic group against another, resulting in genocide. You will agree with us that music is but one part of our popular culture and rap music or hip-life as a contemporary music in Ghana and beyond can summon emotions of various kind. This is especially so, coming from well established artistes such as Sarkodie, a recognised producer like Kaywa and a musician like yourself who just last year won the MTN Hitmaker show. Thus, depending on its lyrics or contents, music can communicate harmful messages.

The fact that a single “Jennifer Lomotey” is mentioned does not limit the matter to that imaginary person in the song. “Jennifer Lomotey” is not a contemporary of Okomfo Anokye. Therefore, it cannot be said that she was directly and singularly involved in the alleged act of voyeurism on Okomfo Anokye which in turn induced the curse on her. Rather, the alleged curse, based on an unpopular and discriminatory myth, has been making the rounds that it was allegedly inflicted during the time of Okomfo Anokye and it accounts for Krobos being supposedly sexually promiscuous. Therefore, that myth has become generational and by implication, all Krobo ladies are thereby deemed promiscuous. The statement is indeed a frivolous one which cannot be substantiated and granting but not admitting that it is true, it cannot be traced to a curse imposed by Okomfo Anokye. Therefore, the lyrics of your song points directly to the entire Krobo females and by extention their males.

The fact that it is not true, however, does not discount the negative impact it can have and has had on the Krobo family. These are words that hurt a community’s identity and freedom as Ghanaians and which hinders their right to participate as a citizen in the country of which they rightly belong, thereby impairing social cohesion.

The truth is that the lyrics of the song which are in contention here is defamatory because it has caused disaffection among the Krobos and has as a consequent, injured their hard-earned reputation by exposing them to ridicule or to lowering them in the esteem of right-thinking members of the Ghanaian society. Secondly, the song has been widely circulated and played on social media (including Whatsapp, Youtube, Instagram and Facebook) and traditional media (including radio and television stations). We have already established the untruth in this abominable discriminatory myth and it is a myth that you cannot justify its publication. Could you also say it is a fair comment on a matter of public interest, if not simply to exploit a myth to gain commercial advantage?

In light of the above, you are hereby advised to implement the following steps:

1. Issue an immediate order to the relevant media houses asking them to halt playing the “Jennifer Lomotey” song on their airwaves;

  1. Expunge or cause to be expunged the portion of the lyrics which my clients find offensive and defamatory or completely ban the use of that song from the airwaves;
  2. Expunge or cause to be expunged all audio and video clips of the song which are found on various social media platforms that are registered in your name;
  3. Write an unreserved apology to the Chiefs and people of the Krobo Traditional Area, including a statement to the effect that such an offensive act will not be repeated against the Krobo people;
  4. Make a statement to the general public advising them to desist from transferring or sharing the song which contains the offensive lyrics with anybody else; and,
  5. For denting the image of the Krobo people and dragging their hardearned reputation in the mud, pay a compensation of two million Ghana cedis (GHS2,000,000) to the Krobo people.

    Please take notice and notice is hereby served that failure to respond to these demands WITHIN A WEEK of receipt of this letter will result in legal action being taken against you without further notice to you.

    Yours truly,

    Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua (Dr)

“You Made Us Dress Almost Nak*d But Chose Doctor As A Wife”

108
Manasseh Azure Awuni

Stonebwoy’s marriage to Dr. Louisa Ansong happening on June 16 has become talk of the town after Zionfelix.net reported the news.

Whilst many are happy for the yet-to-be Mr. and Mrs., others are raising questions about the union. One of the few people who have issue with the BHiM Nation president’s choice of a woman as a wife is investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni. The Multimedia Group worker in a Facebook rebuked the BET award-winner for making ladies dress almost naked in his music videos but did not marry any of them.

He questioned why Stonebwoy made these ladies exhibit such behaviour in his videos but secretly went behind them to choose a decent lady to be his wife.

“When you do your music, you tell us to dress almost naked and feature in your videos. We twerk and do all the things you want us to do. When it was time to marry, you went for a dentist, who’s dress code is so decent, so different from what you make us portray to the world. What are you telling us?” Manasseh Azure Awuni wrote on Facebook Wednesday evening.

‘‘I’m Not Brand Ambassador For Timberland Boots’’ – Edem

6

Ghanaian rapper; Edem has made a major move in his life. The rapper recently opened a Timberland boutique located at Community 22 where he trades in original Timberland boots.

Speaking with Eric Acquah on ‘Sika S3m’ on ATV, Edem has debunked rumors circulating that he has been made a brand ambassador for Timberland.

‘I’m not a brand ambassador, and I don’t work alone. I have partners who bring in the original; we work hand-in-hand to get mutual benefits. We just make sure we get the originals from the right source; so I’m not at any level being an ambassador for Timberland; or Timberland worldwide. We have the funds to be able to bring them in; we get a good deal, and people here can also get a good deal.’

Edem further stated that his main reason for setting up the boutique was to encourage the youth to aim at bigger successes.

‘I just feel I have to empower the young ones. We have to empower ourselves. We have to grow to become better people. Everybody saw me in 2009 with Hammer; and then I left Hammer. I have to continue to grow. In continuing to grow, you have to grow in business, you have to grow to be a better person and grow in business and employ people who are fans of your music; people who are intelligent. So that is why we are doing this apart from music,’ he said.

Edem added; ‘Timberland is very hip-hop. It’s very rugged, funky, ‘yoyo,’ all the words you can find. And that is the field I am in. So I feel that it’s right to have that in the market, but the real reason I brought Timberland is because myself as an artist I don’t get the original ones to buy whenever I go to the market. I always get the inferior ones and I’m thinking there are people like me who would want the proper one that is original from the source, so why not supply or fill that need for people who need original Timberland. You never know, I might start selling original converse.’

Born Denning Edem Hotor, Edem is a one of Ghana’s biggest musicians. He is known for his hit songs such as Nyedzilo, Kpordawoe, The One, Koene, Wicked and Bad, among others.
