Salifu Amoako’s son remanded again

The 16-year-old son of Bishop Salifu Amoako involved in a fatal car crash at East Legon that led to the deaths of two people has been remanded once again.

Elrad Amoako, who is facing charges that include eight counts of manslaughter, negligent harm, dangerous driving, and driving without a license, was initially remanded after his court appearance last Friday. He pleaded not guilty to these charges during his first appearance before the Family and Juvenile Court.

It remains unclear whether the juvenile has been sent to a correctional facility or placed in the custody of his parents, in accordance with section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2003 (ACT 653).

The hearing was not open to the public, according to Graphic Online. This provision allows a juvenile court to commit a minor to the care of a parent, guardian, close relative, or other responsible person, or to remand the juvenile to a nearby remand home if not released on bail.

The case has been adjourned until November 13.

According to Assistant State Attorney Ebenezer Yaw Acquah, although underage and without a valid driver’s license, the juvenile’s family regularly allowed him access to their vehicles.

On October 12, 2024, the family held a birthday celebration for him at an event center in East Legon. During the event, the juvenile requested the keys to his mother’s Jaguar F-Pace from Linda Bonsu Bempah, who, as his personal assistant, was holding the keys while overseeing the event. Linda handed him the keys, and he took the car to A&C Mall with a friend, where they met other friends waiting in two SUVs.

The prosecutor explained that the three vehicles formed a convoy, with the accused leading in his mother’s Jaguar. At one point along Dzane-Ashie Road, despite other vehicles nearby, the juvenile accelerated rapidly to display the car’s speed, driving recklessly toward a T-junction at Mensah Wood Avenue.

He reached the junction as an Acura driven by Joseph Ackah was slowing to make a turn. The prosecutor stated that the accused “rammed into the rear of the Acura,” causing a violent collision that propelled both cars across the road and into a wall, damaging an ECG pole. Both cars immediately caught fire, quickly turning into a raging blaze. The juvenile and his passenger managed to escape, but those in the Acura were trapped.

Ackah had been driving his employer’s two daughters—one a toddler—and their two friends, both 12 years old. Witnesses attempted to extinguish the flames but could not contain the fire. Ackah forced his door open, falling into the flames before bystanders could drag him to safety.

One of the volunteers rescued the toddler from the burning car, while others freed her sister from the back seat. Sadly, despite attempts, the two other girls could not be saved as the fire intensified.

The prosecutor added that the investigation revealed the accused was driving recklessly, endangering the lives of others on the road. The juvenile admitted to taking the keys from Linda Bempah and driving with his friend to the A&C Mall.

Ghanaian Filmmakers Slow to Submit for Nollywood in Diaspora Film-Food Festival, Sparking Industry Reflection

0

As the Nollywood in Diaspora Film-Food Festival gears up to bring cinema enthusiasts from around the world to Accra from 27th to 29th December, the initial response to the film submission call has been staggering. Within just 24 hours of opening submissions, the festival received entries from over 20 countries, highlighting the eagerness of filmmakers globally to participate. Surprisingly, though, there’s a notable absence of submissions from Ghana itself, the host country, leading to pointed questions and reflections within the Ghanaian film industry.

For a festival hosted on home soil, one might expect a strong showing of Ghanaian talent. Instead, the initial silence has some observers questioning whether local filmmakers misunderstood the festival’s intent, perceiving it as a Nollywood-only affair rather than an opportunity for broader African and diaspora representation. “When the lion roars, it doesn’t mean the leopard cannot join,” goes an old proverb that aptly captures the sentiment here: this festival celebrates African storytelling in all its forms, not solely Nollywood’s.

Some voices within the industry suggest that Ghanaian filmmakers might have underestimated the festival’s significance or overlooked it as an opportunity to showcase their work alongside Nollywood giants on an international platform. With Nollywood’s extensive global reach, some local filmmakers may feel overshadowed, perhaps presuming that their unique stories may not garner the same attention. However, the absence of Ghanaian entries overlooks a golden opportunity to shine on a stage designed for a global audience with an appetite for diverse African narratives.

Mr. Destiny Austine Omon, the festival’s lead organizer, expressed hope that more Ghanaian filmmakers would see this as an invitation rather than an exclusion. “The festival may bear the Nollywood name, but it’s an open celebration of African storytelling, and that includes Ghana’s powerful voice in cinema,” he noted. “The stage is set here in Accra, a city rich with culture, and there’s space for Ghanaian films to represent that.”

The lack of immediate Ghanaian entries raises bigger questions about the connectivity and inclusivity of West African film industries. Despite Nollywood’s considerable success, Ghana’s film industry is far from silent, with many talented creatives working to make their mark on both local and international stages. Yet there’s often a perception gap that places Nollywood in the spotlight, leaving Ghanaian cinema in its shadow. Addressing this imbalance would not only enrich Ghana’s presence in festivals like this but also bring greater recognition to the broader spectrum of West African storytelling.

As submissions remain open, there’s hope that Ghanaian filmmakers will reconsider and step forward. After all, the Nollywood in Diaspora Film-Food Festival is more than a showcase; it’s a chance to amplify African voices in unison. Ghana’s own filmmakers have a unique place in this celebration and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to remind the world that African cinema is as diverse as it is powerful, encompassing voices far beyond Nollywood alone.

The popular Ghanaian prophet stated in a recent interview on Hitz FM that his prophecies are not accurate every time.

He said prophets who always get their prophecies 100 percent accurate are fake.

Gaisie admitted that prophets are humans and can make mistakes.

“I sometimes get my prophecies wrong. That makes me a human being. Every prophet that gets it 100% is fake.

“Sometimes God will twist your mouth, and your lips to make a mistake so that you the vessel will know that you are a human being. Sometimes I get it wrong. That is why you have to always be sharp spiritually.

“That is why in the space of a prophet, we don’t like disturbances. My emotions are very important to me because I can see red and misinterpret it. And so sometimes we get it wrong,” he said on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz.

“Most of us the prophets are not educated. And the senior men of faith did not hold us, they didn’t welcome us. So personally, I have made a lot of mistakes which are regrettable. Because I didn’t have anybody who was so much interested in me.

“Someone like Reverend Eastwood Anaba will call me sometimes at dawn. He is someone that I love, and [for] some of us, he is like the checks and balances for us,” Nigel Gaisie averred.

He added that not having mentors when he started his ministry was also a challenge.

“So we made certain mistakes which were avoidable. But we are growing. There are things that I did about 9 or 10 years ago. Given the opportunity to have prophesied about Mahama, I wouldn’t have said it the way I said it,” the founder and leader of Prophetic Hill Chapel further stated.
