Celestine Donkor Reveals What Sustains Her Marriage

0

Ghanaian gospel singer Celestine Donkor has stated that the strength of her marriage rests on three non-negotiables: “true love, true understanding and true forgiveness,” values she believes have helped her sustain both her home and her calling.

In her view, these principles are not optional but essential, especially for couples navigating the pressures of family life alongside demanding careers in ministry.

Speaking in a one-on-one interview with Lekzy Decomic on Joy Prime’s prime time show, Celestine explained that commitment to these values makes a marriage workable. “I believe you can marry any guy,” she said, as long as those foundations are consistently practised.

Anchoring her perspective in her Christian faith, she noted that love was never designed for flawless people. “What introduced love to us is Christ, and Christ loved us while we were still sinners. Love is supposed to be done to imperfect people, but we humans want to love perfect people, and that is the struggle.” She went on to describe love as “an antidote to imperfection.”

The singer also spoke warmly about her husband, who serves as her manager, crediting him for helping her maintain balance amid competing responsibilities. Despite inevitable challenges, she said she has learned to keep her marriage, family, and ministry aligned. “I have married my family and my ministry. Everything is married,” she said.

According to Celestine, drawing a line between home and calling is unrealistic. “It’s really hard to separate family from ministry. I believe family is ministry, so my husband is in it, and so are my children. Everybody does their role appropriately,” she added.

Looking back, the gospel singer revealed that music was not part of her original career ambitions.

“The plan was to be a businesswoman or to study law, but I ended up doing music,” Celestine disclosed.

She also recalled a challenging episode in her marriage that tested her resolve. During a misunderstanding with her husband, she still had to minister publicly.

“I had to pull myself together and show up for ministration despite the circumstance,” she recalled, pointing to the level of discipline she believes is required to successfully manage both marriage and ministry.

Daddy Lumba Anticipated The Chaos After His Death – Ofori Amponsah Opens Up

0

Ofori Amponsah has opened up about how Daddy Lumba seemed to foresee the turmoil that would follow his death, even hinting at it in one of his songs. He spoke as he called for unity among those caught up in disputes over the late musician’s funeral.

“Greatness attracts these kinds of things. I know everybody wants a piece of this great man. And the aftermath of his death would bring such situations. I know he foresaw it. In one of his songs, he sang about it. I believe that he knew that when he’s not around, something of this sort will happen,” Ofori Amponsah said.

On Talkertainment with Elsie Lamar on GhanaWeb TV, he described himself as “not part of the family and just a ‘son’” and warned that ongoing conflicts among Daddy Lumba’s relatives could overshadow the legend’s legacy.

“This is the time for them to sit down carefully and see that this thing is going to affect even his children as a whole. The legacy that he’s left, he left it for the children and the family. So if there is any kind of friction or misunderstanding, I think they should settle it in the backyard,” he urged.

Ofori Amponsah also shared a personal hope to one day honour the late highlife legend through a dedicated mausoleum. “I am also envisioning that one day I will see a mausoleum of this great man, and I’ll be the first person to visit that mausoleum,” he said.

His remarks were on the back of a widely reported legal battle over Daddy Lumba’s family since the musician passed on July 26, 2025. The Kumasi and Accra High Courts have handled competing injunctions and lawsuits concerning funeral arrangements, widowhood rites, and custody of Lumba’s remains.

One notable injunction was filed by Akosua Serwaa, Daddy Lumba’s legal wife, seeking to pause funeral preparations and assert her role in widowhood rites. The Kumasi High Court later dismissed the injunction, allowing both Akosua Serwaa and Odo Broni to permit the extended family to proceed with the burial in Kumasi.

In the week leading up to the planned funeral, maternal relatives requested a court order to block the release of the musician’s body. Although the injunction was initially granted, it was quickly lifted after the maternal family failed to pay GH¢2 million in compensation for costs incurred.

Daddy Lumba’s funeral eventually took place on December 13 in Kumasi, though several family members, including his legal wife Akosua Serwaa, were notably absent.

Ofori Amponsah has confirmed that no achievement in his decades-long music journey compares to the period he spent learning from and creating music with the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

In an interview with Elsie Lamar on Talkertainment on GhanaWeb TV, the veteran singer traced his formative years in the industry to his close association with the legendary musician, describing that chapter as the most rewarding of his career.

“When I came out with Daddy Lumba, the songs we wrote together were my highest point. Later, I released good songs like ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Otoolege’. They were equally good, but working with Daddy Lumba was my sweetest time,” he said.

Amponsah explained that beyond the music, Daddy Lumba played a defining mentorship role that shaped his confidence and artistic direction, urging him to see greater possibilities for himself within the industry.

“He made me see possibilities. He encouraged me to be the best that I can be, and I will miss him so much. He was a great gift to this nation and to the world,” he said.

Reflecting on his influences, the highlife star named Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi as the two artists who left the deepest impression on him during his upbringing, noting that their work helped mould his songwriting approach.

“I grew up listening to Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi. I especially wrote songs around Kojo Antwi’s songs. They are my icons,” he stated.

Ofori Amponsah also spoke emotionally about the death of Daddy Lumba, admitting that the news initially felt unreal. He described the late musician as a father figure whose absence has created a gap that cannot easily be filled.

“I didn’t believe it at first, but when I later confirmed it, I knew my father was gone. There is no one to fill these shoes.

“He is one of the greatest singers Ghana has ever known, and it will take a long time for someone to fill the void he has left,” he stated.
