“We Are Not Serious” – Lily Mohammed Blasts Government Over IShowSpeed Passport

0

Ghanaian broadcaster and TV producer Lily Mohammed has launched a blistering critique of the government’s move to issue a Ghanaian passport to American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed, directing her criticism squarely at Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Her comments followed a social media post by the minister on Tuesday, January 27, announcing that the popular content creator had been granted a Ghanaian passport. Ablakwa said the decision was informed by engagements that linked IShowSpeed’s ancestry to Ghana and positioned the gesture as part of a wider effort to welcome the global African diaspora, particularly those who spotlight the country in a positive light.

However, speaking on her GHOne TV programme, Lily dismissed that explanation and argued that the state had treated citizenship far too lightly. While conceding that the YouTuber’s visit brought international attention to Ghana, she insisted that visibility and online buzz should not be the basis for granting a national passport.

According to her, the move exposed a deeper problem of misplaced priorities among those in charge.

“Listen, let’s get serious as a country. It’s like this country is not serious. Somebody comes to the country — yes, he is a streamer, he is putting Ghana on the global map and whatever — the person comes to the country for a day or two and then you shove the Ghanaian passport into the person’s hands. You guys are not serious. You are not serious, eh?”

Lily said her disappointment was heightened because of the individual involved, noting that Ablakwa’s past record and public image had set a higher bar for accountability.

“Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, you were someone we had high expectations of. You shoved a Ghanaian passport into the hands of someone who came and was embarking on his own personal thing,” she stated.

She went on to question the tangible economic impact of the visit, asking what real gains the country had recorded beyond social media moments and sightseeing clips.

“Okay, the coming to jump on our jollof and Black Star Square — what has it done to our GDP? What has it done to our economy?

“We tolerate nonsense and unimportant stuff in this country. You have given him a Ghanaian passport — for what? For what achievement? What has he done for Ghana? That he has come to sit on our jollof?”

To further drive home her argument, Lily contrasted the situation with the experience of Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya, whose long-running travel content has promoted Ghana and Africa across several countries. Despite years of consistent exposure, she noted, no foreign state has rewarded him with citizenship or a passport simply for highlighting their culture.

She also pointed to the daily struggles of ordinary Ghanaians seeking passports, describing a system marked by long queues, delays and bureaucratic obstacles, even for citizens born and raised in the country.

“Meanwhile, true Ghanaians are queuing for passports. Ghanaian citizens born in Ghana, who have the right to citizenship, are still queuing for passports. Ghanaians are still struggling to access a common passport,” she lamented.

Lily was quick to clarify that her criticism was not aimed at IShowSpeed personally. She said she welcomed his visit, praised his adventurous spirit and acknowledged Ghana’s appeal as a destination for global visitors.

Nonetheless, she insisted that granting him a Ghanaian passport was unwarranted and urged the state to attach greater value to citizenship.

“I don’t have any problem with him or his coming to Ghana. It’s beautiful, and I commend him for his bravery and adventure, but to give him a Ghanaian passport — come on. What has he done? What for? Let’s get serious as a country.

“We are not serious. It’s time we put some respect and value on our Ghanaian passport and on the country,” Lily Mohammed further stated.

Nigerian music star Davido, the hitmaker behind Assurance, has set social media abuzz after humorously reacting to videos of American streamer IShowSpeed being pampered by Ghanaian women during his visit to the country.

American streamer Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed, enjoyed one of the most memorable moments of his African tour while in Ghana on January 26, 2026. During a live stream, the 21-year-old was seen shirtless in black shorts, relaxing as he received a massage at the scenic Asenema Waterfall in Akropong.

The experience was delivered by Ghanaian women dressed in elegant, colourful African print outfits, beautifully showcasing the country’s rich culture and hospitality. Though the massage session was brief, it was designed to help the streamer unwind and feel refreshed ahead of his packed schedule in Ghana.

To complete the traditional setting, some of the women were seen gently fanning IShowSpeed with large plantain leaves, creating a serene and homely atmosphere that delighted viewers across social media platforms.

The viral footage caught the attention of Davido, who jokingly asked his wife, Chioma, for permission to travel to Ghana to enjoy a similar experience. Tagging her in a playful comment on Instagram, the billionaire singer wrote:

“@thechefchi oh boy my darling wife pls permit me, this nah Ghana.”

Davido’s lighthearted reaction quickly went viral, drawing laughter from fans and followers across Africa and beyond. Many social media users also praised the organisers of IShowSpeed’s Ghana visit, commending them for their creativity and effective promotion of Ghanaian culture and tourism.

The moment has further highlighted Ghana’s growing appeal as a top cultural and tourism destination, especially among global influencers and celebrities.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa announces Ghanaian Passport for IShowSpeed after visit

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that popular American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed will be issued a Ghanaian passport following his recent visit to the country.

The North Tongu MP disclosed the development in a social media post, stating that the decision followed discussions and confirmation of the content creator’s ancestral and cultural ties to Ghana.

Ablakwa also credited renowned Ghanaian YouTuber and travel influencer Wode Maya for playing a key role in facilitating the engagement that led to the approval.

“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” Ablakwa stated.

IShowSpeed, born Darren Watkins Jr., visited Ghana as part of his wider Africa tour, during which he explored cultural landmarks, interacted with local communities, and connected with young creatives and digital content creators. His activities in Accra, including visits to popular sites and collaborations with Ghanaian influencers, attracted massive attention on social media and further amplified Ghana’s visibility among global youth audiences.

Ablakwa praised both IShowSpeed and Wode Maya for their role in promoting Ghana internationally, encouraging them to continue projecting the country and the African continent positively.

“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud,” he said.

He further referenced their previous recognition by the state, adding, “Ghana celebrates you both. You remain our worthy ambassadors, and we are ever so delighted to have granted you a diplomatic passport last year.”

The Foreign Affairs Minister concluded by reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to strengthening relationships with the African diaspora and global cultural figures who positively promote the country.

“For God, Country & Continent,” Ablakwa wrote.

The announcement has since sparked excitement online, with many Ghanaians welcoming IShowSpeed’s growing connection to the country and applauding efforts to use culture and digital influence to boost Ghana’s global image.

Bishop J.Y. Adu Speaks On Late Yaw Sarpong’s Health Struggles & Curse From A Lady

0

Founder of New Jerusalem Chapel in Kumasi, Bishop J. Y. Adu, has publicly spoken about the challenges the late veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong faced in the months leading up to his death.

The Ghanaian music industry was plunged into mourning after Hello FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, confirmed Yaw Sarpong’s death on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

Reports indicate that the celebrated gospel singer died while on admission at Emena Hospital in the Ashanti Region after battling prolonged health complications.

Yaw Sarpong had been on a recovery journey following a stroke he suffered in early 2024, an illness that left him bedridden and unable to perform with his renowned Asomafo Band.

His condition prompted public appeals for financial support to help cater for mounting medical expenses.

The musician’s health struggles attracted national attention, including a visit from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who, together with other leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), visited Sarpong at his residence in the Ashanti Region and offered financial assistance.

His death came barely a month after the passing of his longtime Asomafo bandmate and caregiver, Maame Tiwaa, who reportedly died from health-related issues on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

However, speaking in an interview with Smart Ghana TV on Monday, January 26, 2026, Bishop J.Y. Adu introduced a spiritual dimension to the late musician’s struggles. According to the preacher, Yaw Sarpong was once placed under a curse by a woman over an unpaid debt.

Bishop Adu claimed that the late gospel musician, accompanied by his elder siblings, later visited the woman to repay the debt and offer an apology, but she allegedly refused to accept it or reverse the curse.

He further alleged that a spiritualist eventually intervened to reverse the curse after the woman declined reconciliation.

In a striking claim, Bishop Adu stated that the woman allegedly passed away on the same day Yaw Sarpong regained the ability to walk, during his recovery from the stroke.

A TikTok video of Bishop J.Y. Adu recounting the alleged events has since surfaced online, sparking mixed reactions among social media users, with some expressing shock while others have urged caution in attributing spiritual causes to health-related deaths.

Blakk Rasta Challenges Shatta Wale To Back GH¢100m Lawsuit With Action

0

Questions are being raised by Blakk Rasta after Shatta Wale went public with claims of a GH¢100 million defamation lawsuit, with the media personality insisting that no official court process has reached him.

Speaking in a video shared on YouTube, the reggae artiste said that despite the lawsuit being heavily promoted online by Shatta Wale and his associates, he has not been served with any writ of summons.

Blakk Rasta pointed out that nearly 10 days had elapsed since reports of the legal action first surfaced, a delay he said makes the move appear more like an online spectacle than a serious court matter.

“Shatta Wale said he was taking Blakk Rasta to court. The court documents were already circulating in the media, yet Blakk Rasta has received no writ of summons. About 10 days have gone by now, no summons. Or is this a social media court case? Is it just hype?” he said.

He further challenged Shatta Wale over the lack of progress, particularly in light of the dancehall artiste’s public claims about having the financial means and legal expertise to pursue the case.

“He said he would use me as an example and that he has money to pay his lawyers. Shatta, you say you have money and good lawyers, let them serve me quickly. What are they waiting for?” Blakk added.

Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, was reported on January 19, 2026, to have filed the defamation suit against Blakk Rasta, accusing him of making statements he describes as false, misleading and damaging to his image.

In the writ of summons, the dancehall musician claimed the video at the heart of the dispute spread rapidly online, attracting more than 150,000 views on Facebook and over 27,000 views on YouTube within a day, in addition to thousands of reactions and comments.

Why Charlyn Fosuh Pulled Out Of Daddy Lumba’s Estate Case

0

Charlyn Fosuh, daughter of the late Ghanaian music legend Daddy Lumba, has spoken out about why she removed herself from her mother’s application for letters of administration over her father’s estate.

On January 26, 2026, she officially filed a request with the Kumasi High Court to have her name taken off the case.

In a TikTok video, Charlyn addressed rumours suggesting that she had launched legal action against her mother, Akosua Serwaa, or their lawyer, William Kusi.

She called the claims false, clarifying that her only intention was to withdraw from the proceedings and that she had not filed a lawsuit against anyone involved.

Charlyn explained that her decision was influenced by personal commitments and the demands of the legal process, which she said would prevent her from fully representing her siblings in the estate matters.

“We went to court to take my name out of the letters of administration, and I want everyone to know I didn’t sue my mum or Lawyer William Kusi. The reason why I went to do that was I am entering a phase of my life, where I’m graduating law school soon and wouldn’t have the time to represent my siblings in the letters of administration. That’s why I have decided to take my name out,” she said.

This development follows reports on January 13, 2026, that Akosua Serwaa had filed for letters of administration to assume control of her late husband’s estate. The application, prepared by Lawyer William Kusi of Dominion Chambers, originally listed Akosua Serwaa, Charlyn Fosuh, and Daddy Lumba’s sister, Ernestina Fosu, as the applicants.

Charlyn Fosuh Takes Legal Step To Stay Out Of Daddy Lumba Estate Feud

Fresh court filings have reopened questions around the estate of late Highlife musician Daddy Lumba, pushing family disagreements back before the Kumasi High Court despite earlier efforts to calm speculation.

At the centre of the latest development is Charlyn Fosuh, one of the musician’s daughters, who has taken steps to formally distance herself from legal documents seeking authority over her father’s property. She has applied to have her name removed from letters of administration submitted by Daddy Lumba’s widow, Akosua Serwaa, and his elder sister, Ernestina Fosu.

The application follows a public response issued by the late musician’s children just days earlier, after social media claims suggested their mother had forged Charlyn Fosuh’s name and personal details in court papers. In that statement, the children firmly rejected the allegations, voiced support for their mother and maintained that no falsification had taken place or that Charlyn Fosu had been secretly added to the legal process.

However, in a separate move on January 26, 2026, Charlyn Fosuh filed a misjoinder at the Kumasi High Court, asking that her name be struck out of the documents altogether. The court heard the application the same day.

Her lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, confirmed after proceedings that the judge had granted the request and ordered the removal of her name from the letters of administration.

Detailing the grounds for the application, Afoakwa said, “We are here because Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa, and his sister, Ernestina Fosu, filed letters of administration to manage the musician’s estate, and in that document, they included Charlyn Fosuh’s name.

“But Charlyn Fosuh, together with the other 10 children, did not agree to apply for letters of administration. Per their decision, even if any child is to be included, they support Calvin Fosu as the appropriate person to do so,” he said.

According to the lawyer, the children are not interested in prolonging the matter through drawn-out court battles. Instead, he said they are appealing to both sides involved to resolve their differences amicably and allow the family to focus on preserving Daddy Lumba’s legacy.

“She wished the controversies had died down so the family could appreciate the legacy their father left behind before his demise. She added that if the children are to appoint someone to lead the legal process, it should be the male-born,” he stated.

“Not At All… Never” – ACP Kofi Sarpong Denies Ever Taking A Bribe

What began as a routine radio interview quickly veered into candid territory when a listener confronted gospel star and senior police officer ACP Kofi Sarpong with a blunt question about integrity.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, who balances his law enforcement career with a prominent presence in Ghana’s gospel music scene, was asked live on air whether he had ever taken a bribe, either in uniform or as a musician.

During an interview on Hitz FM on January 26, 2026, Sarpong laughed before replying, “Not at all… never.”

He did not stop there. Sarpong added that throughout his years in public service, he had neither been tempted nor pressured to accept a bribe, insisting that such situations had simply never arisen in his career.

As the discussion continued, attention turned to how his rising rank within the Ghana Police Service might affect his music. Sarpong acknowledged that his musical output would be shaped by the demands of his official duties, but stressed that promotion would not extinguish his purpose as a gospel singer.

“It will depend on the workload on me but the talent is from God and I can’t hide it. So, when I climb up the ladder, any opportunity that I will have, I will do what God asked me to do,” he states.

ACP Kofi Sarpong also shed light on his creative process, explaining that while he writes some of his own songs, he also collaborates with other writers when crafting his music.

Abu Trica Re-Arrested Shortly After Court Discharge

0

Hours after the High Court dismissed his bid to challenge his treatment at the Gbese District Court, Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, was taken back into custody on Monday, January 26.

Abu Trica faces allegations of romance fraud, prompting the United States to request his extradition from Ghana.

The initial extradition case involved Abu Trica and two other individuals before the Gbese District Court. However, the State later dropped the charges against the two co-accused.

Following the withdrawal, Abu Trica’s legal team argued that the conspiracy charge against him was no longer valid. The District Court agreed, resulting in the discharge of all three defendants.

Despite this, Abu Trica filed a certiorari application at the High Court, seeking to overturn certain elements of the lower court’s handling of the case.

During the hearing, the Attorney-General’s office maintained that the matter was moot, citing the prior discontinuation of the prosecution and Abu Trica’s discharge.

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, representing Abu Trica, responded that his client remained in detention despite the charges being dropped, calling it a “disconnect between the letter of the law and its practical effect.”

Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai assured the court that immediate steps would be taken to secure Abu Trica’s release if he was still being held.

The High Court eventually struck out the certiorari application, concluding that the issue was moot once Abu Trica had been discharged.

Shortly after the hearing, authorities reportedly re-arrested Abu Trica, raising fresh questions about his ongoing detention.

Court Reportedly Discharges Abu Trica Amid Tense Rearrest Attempt

The extradition proceedings against social media personality Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, reportedly came to an unexpected halt at the Gbese District Court on Monday, January 26, 2026. Kumi and two co-accused, facing allegations of involvement in a multimillion-dollar online fraud case originating in the United States, were discharged by the court.

Their lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, confirmed the ruling, revealing that all three individuals were cleared of the charges before the court. He added that immediately after the judgment, officers from the Narcotics Control Commission attempted to take his clients back into custody within the courtroom, prompting visible displeasure from the presiding judge.

“Just finished at the Gbese District Court. Abu Trica and 2 others have been discharged. NACOC just tried to rearrest them inside the court room. Judge offended,” Barker-Vormawor shared on Facebook, recounting the tense moments that followed the court’s decision.

The case revolved around whether Abu Trica and his associates should be extradited to the United States to face trial over an alleged romance scam reportedly defrauding elderly Americans of more than $8 million.

Abu Trica was initially apprehended by Ghanaian authorities on Thursday, December 11, 2025, after a U.S. indictment accused him of participating in a wide-reaching online fraud operation. Court documents unsealed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio claim the scheme operated from 2023 and specifically targeted senior citizens across multiple states.

According to investigators, the network exploited artificial intelligence tools to create fake identities and build emotional connections with victims on social media and dating platforms. These relationships were allegedly used to solicit money and valuables, often under false pretenses such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or investment opportunities. The indictment further accuses Abu Trica of helping to channel funds sent from Ohio to accomplices in Ghana and other locations.

U.S. prosecutors have charged him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to launder money, and included a forfeiture specification linked to the alleged proceeds from the scheme.
