Adorable video of Medikal unboxing a gift phone from Shatta Wale with his daughter Island Frimpong warms hearts

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has melted hearts online after surprising his daughter, Island Frimpong, with a brand-new mobile phone at his mansion.

In a video that has since gone viral, the award-winning musician is seen spending quality time with his daughter as they excitedly unbox the phone together.

Both father and daughter expressed joy over the gift, with Medikal explaining that the phone would allow Island to reach him directly anytime without having to go through another person.

The video begins with Medikal showing a box to Island and asking her to guess what was inside.

The young girl admitted she could not guess, prompting her father to reveal that it was a phone. Medikal explained that he decided to get her the device so she could call him whenever she wanted.

As they proceeded to unbox the phone, Medikal took time to explain some of its features to his fascinated daughter.

Island appeared especially impressed when her father told her that the phone was durable and would not break even if it fell into water or fire, though he jokingly cautioned her not to test it by putting it in fire.

“It’s a mobile phone. So now you can call me on WhatsApp and disturb my life and leave Aunty Lydia alone. Let’s unbox it. It will be intact even when you put it into water.

Even if you put it in the fire, it won’t spoil, but don’t go and put it in the fire. When it falls, it doesn’t spoil as well. Your Uncle Shatta Wale got you this one,” Medikal said in the video.

Medikal further revealed that the phone was a gift from renowned dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, fondly referred to as “Uncle” by Island. After unboxing the phone, Medikal encouraged his daughter to show appreciation.

Island sweetly obliged, thanking Shatta Wale and blowing him a kiss, a moment that drew admiration from social media users.

The heartwarming father-daughter interaction has since earned praise from fans, many of whom commended Medikal for his bond with his daughter and Shatta Wale for the thoughtful gesture.

Wode Maya Breaks Silence Over IShowSpeed Ghana Passport Controversy

0

Popular Ghanaian YouTuber and travel vlogger Wode Maya has finally broken his silence amid the growing controversy surrounding the government’s decision to grant American streamer IShowSpeed a Ghanaian passport.

IShowSpeed, born Darren Watkins Jnr, visited Ghana on January 27, 2026, as part of his widely followed Speed Does Africa tour. The livestreamed tour, which began on December 29, 2025, saw the internet sensation travel across several African countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Benin, Angola, Zambia, Eswatini, Senegal, and Ghana.

Following his Ghana visit, which attracted massive global attention to the country through millions of online views, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that IShowSpeed would be issued a Ghanaian passport.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on January 27, the minister disclosed that the decision followed discussions with Wode Maya, who played a key role in organising Speed’s Ghana tour.

“@wode_maya following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” the minister wrote.

The announcement, however, triggered mixed reactions on social media.

While some Ghanaians welcomed the move, describing it as a strategic way of leveraging global digital influence to promote the country, others criticised the decision as rushed and poorly thought through.

One of the strongest reactions came from GHOne TV presenter Lily Mohammed, whose video response quickly went viral.

She described the minister’s action as “unserious,” arguing that IShowSpeed had not made any tangible contribution to Ghana to warrant such an honour.

She also accused the streamer of disrespecting Ghanaian culture, referencing an incident in which he performed a backflip into a bowl of jollof rice.

“Wonyɛ serious? Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, you were somebody that we had high expectations of. You shove a Ghanaian passport into the hands of somebody who comes, who is streaming, who is embarking on his own personal thing. What has he done for Ghana [other than] he’s come to sit on our jollof?” she said.

Amid the heated debate, Wode Maya addressed the issue in a tweet shared on January 29.

Rather than engaging with the criticism, the YouTuber chose to express gratitude to the Foreign Affairs Minister for approving his request. He also warmly invited IShowSpeed to continue visiting Ghana.

“Thank you Hon Okudzeto Ablakwa for granting my request to honour our Ghanaian brother with a Ghanaian passport Hey IShowSpeed, welcome home anytime without a visa!” Wode Maya tweeted.

The controversy continues to dominate online discussions, reigniting broader conversations about citizenship, national honours, cultural respect, and how Ghana should engage global digital influencers in promoting the country.

American singer and songwriter Keri Lynn Hilson has praised Ghanaian global sensation Stonebwoy, describing him as “an angel on earth.”

Hilson noted that, unlike some artists whose offstage personalities feel worlds apart from their music, Stonebwoy’s true self is woven into every song he makes. She also highlighted his willingness to engage in meaningful conversations beyond the music scene.

“One thing I can say about Stonebwoy is that some people you meet are nothing like the music they make, and it kinda takes you aback, but with Stonebwoy he’s exactly the way he makes his records. He’s very calm, he’s very peaceful, he’s so in tune, he’s almost like an angel on earth. He serves a great purpose through his music but it’s really who he is,” Hilson said.

Slim Buster Tells Young Artistes To Think Twice Before Taking Support From Women

0

Veteran highlife musician Slim Buster has issued a blunt warning to emerging artistes, advising them to be cautious about relying on romantic partners or female sponsors to finance their music journeys.

According to the seasoned performer, many young musicians step into the industry armed with raw talent but lacking the financial backing needed to sustain their craft. That gap, he said, often leads them into support arrangements that can quietly limit both their freedom and future choices.

Slim Buster stressed that financial help rooted in personal relationships is rarely neutral, noting that emotional connections can easily evolve into expectations that influence an artiste’s lifestyle and career decisions.

“Most upcoming artistes don’t have money. They depend on some women. When a woman helps you, remember that they will come back for their money,” he said.

He urged young talents to carefully consider the long-term implications before accepting such assistance and to fully understand the commitments that may come with it.

“Young artistes who are depending on women to finance their music should be very careful. Once you allow a woman to help you, make sure you’re going to stick with them whether they’re good or bad,” he stated.

Slim Buster further warned against abandoning or ignoring benefactors once success arrives, emphasizing that fame does not erase past reliance.

“The very moment you decide to move away from them or neglect them because you’ve made it, they will come for you,” Slim Buster further said.

Below is his statement.

J.A. Adofo Opens Up About Mahama’s Support During His Illness

Highlife veteran J.A Adofo has opened up about the quiet lifeline he says President John Dramani Mahama extended to him when his health began to fail, describing months of steady, private support that helped him navigate a painful chapter.

In a recent interview with Ohemaa Woyeje, the veteran Ghanaian musician, born Jackson Alfred Adofo, said the president stepped in shortly after he fell ill and has remained present ever since, largely out of public view.

The musician explained that the assistance has not been symbolic. He said it has involved routine financial help aimed at covering his medical needs, along with other acts of concern that have lightened the strain on him and his family.

“Ever since I fell sick, President Mahama has been giving me gifts, including money to buy medicine every single month. You can ask Mr Beautiful, because he is the one who brings the money,” he said.

Adofo was careful to draw a clear line between the help he receives and partisan politics. He stressed that he does not engage in political activity and insisted the support should not be interpreted as a reward for loyalty or public praise, but rather as a personal gesture.

“Truth be told, I don’t involve myself in politics, but he likes me. My child has passed away, and under normal circumstances, I would have invited him to the burial. However, I understand the responsibilities he carries as President.

“Therefore, I will not disturb him because he is the father of the nation. But I am sure that if he hears that I am burying my child, he would come to support me,” J.A Adofo further stated.

“Speed Does Not Need A Ghanaian Passport, Ghana Benefits More” – Kwame Dadzie Educates Critics

Kwabena Kwabena Reveals The Real Story Behind ‘Mene Woa’

Long before the applause, the awards and the chart runs, a personal loss quietly gave birth to one of Kwabena Kwabena’s most enduring love songs.

The Ghanaian highlife singer, known in private life as George Kwabena Adu, has opened up about the real-life pain behind “Mene Woa,” revealing that the song was not a product of imagination but a reflection of a difficult moment in his own romantic journey. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie, the musician was asked to name a love song from his catalogue that came directly from lived emotion. He did not hesitate.

“That would be when I composed Mene Woa,” he said.

Kwabena Kwabena explained that the song was written during a period when he felt powerless in love. He recalled being deeply committed to a woman he cared for, only for another man to step in and ultimately take her away.

“Because around that time, charley, I was helpless. I was in love and somebody was taking my chick, and the person succeeded too,” he revealed.

Looking back, the award-winning artist noted that his lack of fame at the time was not the deciding factor in how events unfolded. In his view, recognition and popularity would not have altered the outcome.

“Even if I was popular, nothing would have changed. Life happens sometimes,” he added.

From that painful memory, the conversation moved to his broader reflections on love and relationships. When asked what advice he would give young people preparing to fall in love, Kwabena Kwabena rejected the idea that love is something one plans or controls.

“You don’t decide to fall in love; you just fall. It’s not a decision. I think it’s about feeling. It’s about that individual who gives you something extraordinary or something special,” he said.

On whether love is truly blind, the singer said he firmly believes it is, arguing that real love demands patience and an acceptance of human imperfection.

“Yes, of course, love is blind. Because if you say you’re going to open your eyes to everything, you’ll keep finding faults in the person. The person is human and cannot be perfect,” he explained.

He went further by drawing a parallel between romantic love and God’s love for humanity, describing both as grounded in forgiveness and grace.

“Like God, His love for us is blind. Because if He doesn’t blind His eyes from our deeds, He would find it difficult to love us,” Kwabena Kwabena stated.

Lily Mohammed Backs Down, Apologizes To Ablakwa Over IShowSpeed Passport Comments

0

What began as a fiery television critique has ended with an apology from GHOne presenter Lily Mohammed to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following intense public reaction to her comments on the decision to issue a Ghanaian passport to American streamer IShowSpeed.

The issue surfaced after Ablakwa announced on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had approved the passport after confirming what he described as the YouTuber’s ancestral connection to Ghana.

“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed.”

Within 24 hours, the announcement had become a major talking point on GHOne TV. During a heated discussion on Wednesday, January 28, Lily questioned the rationale behind the move, suggesting it was handled too casually and risked diminishing the value of Ghanaian citizenship.

“Listen, let’s get serious as a country. It’s like this country is not serious. Somebody comes to the country — yes, he is a streamer, he is putting Ghana on the global map and whatever — the person comes to the country for a day or two and then you shove the Ghanaian passport into the person’s hands. You guys are not serious. You are not serious, eh?”

She made it clear that her frustration was amplified by who was involved, saying she expected a higher standard from the minister based on his track record and public standing.

“Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, you were someone we had high expectations of. You shoved a Ghanaian passport into the hands of someone who came and was embarking on his own personal thing,” she stated.

Beyond the optics, Lily challenged the practical value of the visit, questioning whether activities such as sampling local food or visiting historic sites had produced any real economic return for the country.

“Okay, the coming to jump on our jollof and Black Star Square — what has it done to our GDP? What has it done to our economy?

“We tolerate nonsense and unimportant stuff in this country. You have given him a Ghanaian passport — for what? For what achievement? What has he done for Ghana? That he has come to sit on our jollof?”

She went on to compare IShowSpeed’s short stay with the sustained work of Ghanaian travel YouTuber Wode Maya, arguing that years of promoting cultures and destinations abroad have not earned him similar recognition from other countries.

Lily also highlighted the everyday struggles many citizens face when applying for passports, pointing to long queues and delays that persist even for people born and raised in Ghana.

“Meanwhile, true Ghanaians are queuing for passports. Ghanaian citizens born in Ghana, who have the right to citizenship, are still queuing for passports. Ghanaians are still struggling to access a common passport,” she lamented.

Despite the intensity of her remarks, she insisted her criticism was never meant to target IShowSpeed personally. She praised his boldness and curiosity, saying Ghana should always welcome visitors, but maintained that citizenship decisions must be handled with greater seriousness.

“I don’t have any problem with him or his coming to Ghana. It’s beautiful, and I commend him for his bravery and adventure, but to give him a Ghanaian passport — come on. What has he done? What for? Let’s get serious as a country.

“We are not serious. It’s time we put some respect and value on our Ghanaian passport and on the country,” Lily Mohammed further stated.

As clips from the broadcast spread online, reactions were sharply divided, with critics taking issue with her tone while others shared her concerns about process and principle.

In the wake of the backlash, Lily later rendered an apology to Mr Ablakwa, conceding that some of her comments crossed the line and expressing regret over how they were expressed.
